New Bleachers in gym good for handicapped, bad for big crowds 12/07 PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Ana Billingsley
The San Francisco Unified School District installed gym bleachers over the summer to provide better disabled access.
The new bleachers are in compliance with the American Disability Act, according to physical education teacher Sascha Taylor-Ray. They are now wider and wheelchair-accessible, however, they have about 200 fewer seats which reduces the already limited seating area, according to athletics department head Robert Ray. “I think they look nice but capacity is a big issue, especially during basketball season when we have a packed house,” Ray said. In addition to the loss of seating, the new bleachers take ten minutes more to set up, which is an inconvenience since they have to be set up and put away three to four times a week after school, according to Ray.
However, the new bleachers do appeal to the spectators. Junior Arman Liawang feels that the new bleachers are more comfortable and a lot safer. “ I like them so much better because I’m not afraid of falling through the gaps like the old ones,” Liawang said.
