Rapper flown in for dance (12/07) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Camille Smyth
Student Body Council’s winter dance “Baby, it’s Cold Outside” is about to leave all other Winterballs out in the cold tonight.     The dance is being held at the Giftcenter Pavilion on Brannan Street like last year. However, several changes are being made to make this year’s dance stand out.
SBC is flying in special guest rapper J. Valentine from Los Angeles. A native of the Bay Area, J. Valentine’s style is a mixture of R&B and Bay Area hip-hop. “We wanted to fly somebody over in order to make (Winterball) bigger,” junior dance coordinator Fiona Co said.
Originally, Co had other performers in mind, including one of the winners from Music Television’s “Making the Band.” However, the task of finding a possible performer proved to be very difficult since many artists were either busy recording or the flights did not work with their schedules.
Due to Co’s brother’s connection with J. Valentine, she was able to negotiate a performance with the rapper. “J. Valentine had performed at one of my brother’s parties,” Co said. “He helped me get a hold of Valentine.” However, because Valentine’s album has yet to be released, he will only be able to perform portions of his songs in order to abide with his contract with Bad Boy Management. Valentine will be performing from 10:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. as an interlude from regular music provided by DNC Entertainment.
On top of flying in a rapper, this year's Winterball is also improving its sound system. “Since we hired a performer, I had to get some better equipment,” Co said. “The equipment is designed for bigger events.”
When students want to take a break from music, they’ll be able to capture themselves in a formal picture. ABC Portraits is shooting portraits on two floors of the Giftcenter Pavilion. In order to avoid long lines, ABC is offering the option of making appointments online. “The company felt that by offering the online option, they’ll be ensuring themselves minimum line waits and be overall more efficient,” Co said.
Around 300 students are expected to attend the event. If students have not bought their tickets yet, they’re a bit too late. The last day to buy tickets was yesterday, Dec. 13.
