Varsity girls' basketball enjoys watching sister act (12/07) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Anthony Clay
Many great basketball teams share one common characteristic: great dynamic duos. But the most unique and memorable duos are the ones in which the members are related. Cousins Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter led the Toronto Raptors to some of the franchise’s greatest accomplishments. Sisters Ashley and Courtney Paris carried Piedmont High School to consecutive state championships. Now it’s the dawn of a new blood-related legacy: Lowell’s girls’ varsity basketball sisters Kristina and Sabrina Lum.   Sophomore Kristina and senior co-captain Sabrina have helped jump start the Cardinals to a 3-1 record, which included a big overtime win against Pinewood on Nov. 28.
Combined, the two have scored 67 of the Cardinals’ 180 points. Though not the loudest or biggest players on the court, the sisters’ intense defense, flashy offense and general leadership make them the most inspirational.
“Just watching them play is amazing,” junior guard Kerry Lee said. “It makes me elevate my game and tempo.”
In addition to inspiring their teammates, the sisters also feed off one another. “We both motivate each other on the court and give positive energy towards each other,” Kristina said.
“Kristina and I definitely inspire each other,” Sabrina said. “We have good chemistry off the court which helps us make smarter plays on the court.”
The Lum sisters view their roles similarly. “(As co-captain), I need to be a leader, set an example for my teammates and play hard,” Sabrina said.
“(As point guard), I need to play hard and give positive directions to my teammates,” Kristina said.
The duo has huge shoes to fill after the graduation of star players Jasmine Holmes and Angelina Clay, who led the Cards to back-to-back city championships. With the statistics and determination the two have shown so far, the team may be headed for a third.
“I have a lot of hopes for the season but the main one is of course winning that city championship for the third time in a row,” Sabrina said.
Come out and see the entertaining and amazing Lum sisters as well as the rest of the very talented Lady Cardinals for their season opener against Burton at 5:15 p.m. on Jan. 4 at Lowell.
