Bleachers updated to satisfy ADA rules (12/07) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Liana Huang
In an e-mail forwarded by assistant principal in charge of building and grounds, Janée Montelongo, the San Francisco Unified School District project manager overseeing Lowell — who, according to Montelongo, wishes to remain anonymous — said, “the bleachers are being replaced to make sure that they are ADA compliant.” The ADA requires schools to provide access to all students.

The removal and installation of bleachers will not interfere with athletic teams or P.E. classes who use the field, according to the SFUSD project manager. The field will be “shared with the school site and the construction crew,” he said in the same forwarded e-mail. The construction is expected to be complete by June 2008.

Many students are pleased with the changes. “I think it’s good that we’re getting new bleachers because the old ones were rickety and unsafe,” senior Amanda Owyoung said.
Others believe the bleachers are not the only thing the school needs to replace. “I think everything around the field needs to be cleaned up a bit, not just the bleachers,” freshman Nick Florio said. “Everything is pretty decrepit.”
The plan for new bleachers was a “decision that was made between administration, the district architect and the district project manager,” according to Montelongo. “This decision was made when Mr. (Peter) Van Court was in this position, before I was put in charge of this area,” she said.
Because the old bleachers would be replaced, the administration chose not to repaint them after this fall’s senior prank, according to Montelongo.
Some students feel that the graffiti ruins the image of the school and should have been painted over regardless.
“How much does it take to repaint ‘08’?” senior Jenna Hwong said. “I think it’s ridiculous that the administration is unable to spare a couple of cans of paint, considering all the construction going on. What do other teams think when they see ‘I block block block 08’?”
