Dragonboat team fundraises (11/07) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Eliza Hidalgo
The dragonboat team is fundraising for a trip to Vancouver for a race by hosting the third annual Paddle-a-Thon on Dec. 15 at Lake Merced.
“We will be paddling 100 kilometers for 12 hours,” junior dragonboat member Melissa Hu said. “We will be starting at 5 a.m., and hopefully finishing before the sun goes down.”     The team needs to raise $10,000 in order to fund the summer Vancouver trip, according to dragonboat coach Brian Danforth, who started the Paddle-a-Thon tradition three years ago. “I wanted something that would grab the attention of the school and community,” he said.
Danforth and sponsor counselor May Choi started dragonboat as a part of the Chinese cultural club 10 years ago. After it became quite popular, they decided to make it separate from the club and begin a team.
Dragonboat has grown from 20 members, when it first started, to an overwhelming 66 members, according to Danforth.
