Homecoming dance breaks tradition (10/07) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Ana Billingsley
Several changes to this year’s homecoming dance resulted in a profitable night.

The SBC sold over 800 tickets for the dance, “Big Things Poppin,” which took place in the courtyard on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 6 to 10 p.m, according to junior SBC dance coordinator Fiona Co.

This year’s homecoming was hosted on a Saturday due to a scheduling conflict with Friday’s Battle of the Birds football game, according to Co. “Battle of the Birds is usually around 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon, but this year it was at 7 p.m.,” Co said. SBC considered the following two Fridays as possible dates for the dance, but the weekends either conflicted with SAT test dates or were too close to senior boat, she said.

The SBC also hired a new DJ for homecoming. “I chose J-Trix because he’s reputable in the club industry,” Co said.

Several students enjoyed the use of a new DJ as opposed to the guest performers hired for several of last year’s dances. “It was better that there weren’t any guest performances because the DJ played songs everyone knew and it kept the energy level up,” senior Rachel O’Hearn said, adding that homecoming is usually the best of Lowell’s non-formal dances.

However, this year’s homecoming had some unexpected security issues. “We did have people who were trying to sneak in through the back,” security guard Ronald Hodges said. “Some were trying to rush in through the doors of the gym because they were left open.”

Security guards caught three outsiders trying to sneak in through the gym. They were later cited and taken away by the police, according to Dean Ray Cordoba.

The final surprise of homecoming was part of the dance’s theme, bubble baths. “Since we had a bubble bath theme, at the end of the night we brought out a bubble-machine,” Co said.

According to junior Nicole Irgens-Moller, this surprise added to the night’s entire success. “The bubble-machine was really cool,” she said.
