The boys’ soccer team’s 3-2 win against Marshall on Sept. 13 is pushing Lowell closer to the championships. With this win and the victory against Lincoln on Sept. 11, the Cardinals improved to a 12-2 overall record.

With such a remarkable start, the team has high hopes for the rest of the season. “Everyone grew a lot over summer, and we’re excited to play the best of the season,” senior forward Matteo DiGiulio said. “I’m confident we’re going to make it to the championship game.”

Back-to-back games on Sept. 4 and 5 were tough for the players. In the first game Lowell easily defeated Gateway 3-1, with two goals coming from sophomore forward Anthony Clay and one from junior forward Joey DiMatteo. Unfortunately, the Cardinals took their first loss the following day to Sonoma, 0-2.

During that game, it became apparent that the Cardinals need to work on their play, especially in the midfield. “That is where all the offensive plays start, and we could use some work on passing the ball upfield,” DiGiulio said.

The Cardinals narrowly escaped with a 3-2 win at the next game against Woodside Priory on Aug. 29. Clay was again the leading scorer, with senior left forward Walker Weir tacking on the last goal.

It’s hard to find much more that needs improvement, however, considering the team won all eight games of the third annual pre-season Drew High School Invitational Scrimmage Tournament from Aug. 23-24. Clay led the way with six goals.

Everyone is beginning to set their sights on the AAA championship, especially coach Ernest Feibusch who thinks this year’s team may be the best in 10 years.

The team is working on forming a strong bond, with support, good attitude and teamwork.

Be sure to make it to today’s game at 3:45 pm on Franklin Field against ISA.
