Bogodist carries team into NorCal second round (5/07) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Julia Kotzian
The varsity boys’ tennis team was pumped and ready for the Northern California Regional Tournament in Davis on May 18. Even though they advanced through the All-City Finals, regionals still seemed “impossible,” according to sophomore Gary Podvalny. Only the “better schools” will be challenging there, Podvalny said.

Senior Alex Le's groundstroke helped win an All-City victory.
The team stayed overnight on Thursday and played Friday. “It was hot,” sophomore Frank Lou said. “We played well through the 1st round, but we were too exhausted for the 2nd round.”

The team showed a whole-hearted effort and played their best, compared to last year’s match, according to Lou.

Unfortunately the Cardinals were eliminated from NorCal finals by Alameda High School with a loss of 1-6, after winning 4-3 against Pleasant Valley-Chico High School in the quarterfinals.

This year’s doubles winners include seniors Alex Lu and Jonathan Louie; senior Max Sidorov and sophomore Victor Kai; and seniors Truman Lam and Greg Balter.

At All-City Finals, the Cardinals, propelled by top doubles players Frank Lou and senior Alex Le and top singles player sophomore Antony Bogodist, defeated Washington 6-1.

Freshman Dylan Tong says he awaits “new freshmen blood,” for next year’s season. Even though eight senior players are leaving, the team has outstanding sophomore players ready to step up.

Lau adds that he is looking forward to making the team stronger.

Anthony Bogodist, boys' tennis MVP
Most Valuble Player

The Lowell’s pick for MVP is sophomore singles player Antony Bogodist. Bogodist’s only lost once during the regular season, and his only loss in NorCals came against a nationally ranked opponent.

Bogodist dominated the AAA, virtually a lock versus any opponent, only losing three games on his march to a second straight All-City victory.

Bogodist could challenge class of ’05 Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong as the greatest Lowell tennis player of all time. Before Bogodist’s time, Hirakawa-Wong won All-City every year of his high school career. Bogodist looks to continue to carry Lowell tennis on his back in his coming years.
