Girls’ soccer swept up its biggest opponent, the Lincoln Mustangs, with ease. Back-to-back wins on April 10 against Marshall and April 12 against Lincoln, 8-0 and 3-0 respectively, prove the power of the Cardinals’ team cohesion and chemistry. These wins mark an improvement from the beginning of the season. Four pre-season losses spoke to the need for team bonding to better understand how each player works, combine skills and play effectively. “The team as a whole has bonded a lot since the beginning of the season,” senior right forward Hannah Edelsberg said. “We learned to help each other rather than focus solely on our own problems.” Senior defender Cheryl Fong agreed on the importance of teamwork. “I don't believe there's anything more important,” she said. “But our focus is definitely on technique for the playoffs, the championship and the Transbay game.” The focus on technique has included a push to increase their variety of footwork. “This is due to our Friday practices which focus on foot movement and ball skills, which is something we haven't done until this year,” Fong said. The Cardinals also developed a new line-up, including moving senior Katie Wheeler-Dubin from goalkeeper to sweeper, creating a solid defense that makes it hard for opposition to get near the goal.
Team members are hoping more fans will be there to witness these changes at their upcoming game against the fourth-seeded team on May 2 at 4 p.m. at Boxer Stadium for playoffs. Fans who want to take their involvement in soccer one step further can come to the soccer club sessions in the Neff Gymnasium on Tuesdays.
Fong, however, explained that those sessions are open to all. “Anyone who would like to play is welcome to join the soccer club sessions, which are usually announced in the weekly bulletin,” she said.
