Not even the rain and gloomy weather that led to the cancellation of the Color Wars rally can stop the undefeated Lowell tennis team this season. On April 19, the Cardinals easily trounced the previously undefeated Washington Eagles.
Staying tough through the end, many of the players scored points easily against the overmatched Eagles. “It really wasn’t that hard (to beat Washington),” junior varsity player freshman Dylan Tong said. Although number-one singles player sophomore Antony Bogodist’s amazingly powerful serve led to a shoulder injury, he was able to finish and win his game. The team has stayed undefeated because of two main reasons — teamwork and an intense dedication to practice. The echoing sound of neon yellow tennis balls on the courts characterizes the team in action. The never-ending pop of balls continues for two hours, five days a week, every day after school. Then the sweaty players gulp down water and head home, satisfied but exhausted. “Our coach, Jimmy, pushes us a lot,” Tong said. For example, he has the team run up Mount Davidson, or as Tong calls it, “heart attack hill.” Sophomore Frank Lu admits that Jimmy’s boot camp-like workouts are “good for the team,” even though they often result in bruises and cramps. However exhausted the Cardinals may be after 17 straight AAA team victories, the hard work is paying off. The team has remained undefeated throughout the regular season, and they look ahead to AAA playoffs and the All-City Finals. The players look confident and well prepared for their upcoming games. Be sure to watch their All-City singles at 1:00 pm on Monday, April 30, in Golden Gate Park, and the continuation of All-City doubles on Tuesday, May 1, also at 1:00 pm at Golden Gate Park.
