Girl's dominate Eagles to make it two in a row (3/07) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Anthony Clay
It’s over. The kind of over that causes tears and will never be forgotten. The kind of over that marks a sense of accomplishment but also rips the soul apart. The girls’ varsity basketball season is over, ending with an outstanding, almost unheard of 29-3 record, including a city title and a bid to the state tournament. Though they lost in the first round of the state tournament by a margin of 20 points against an athletic Kennedy team, the girls are nonetheless happy.

“I’m very proud of this season,” senior co-captain forward (my sister) Angelina Clay said. “We played as a team and unlike last year, where the plays were centered on one player, everyone picked up one another on the court and off the court, developing strong bonds between players.”

“Over these years I have matured,” Clay remarked. “I learned to take personal responsibility for my actions and I just became friendlier.”

Another senior, guard Kimberly Wong, also has progressed as a person. “I have become great friends with some of the people on the team and I am just a better person,” Wong remarked.

However, the team has little time to blow their noses dry. The team will be losing three seniors who were also starters, leading scorers, role models and high intensity players.

Replacing these seniors will be hard, but the current roster is ripe with talent. Some top contenders for this spot include lightening quick freshman guard Kristina Lum, tall and aggressive sophomore Jessie Maio, junior leader and scorer Heather Chow and a fundamentally sound junior Anna Bukareva. In addition sophomore Ashley Ong and freshman Amanda Chow both play tough, intense defense mixed in with smooth jumpers and quick moves to the basket.

There is also the possibility of JV players moving up. One possible addition is quick, hard-working freshman Rachel Baskin. Rachel adds height in addition to all-around game, something the Lady Cardinals would not hesitate to welcome in.

With a combination of young talent and step-up performances from crucial players, the 2007-2008 Lady Cardinals should be prepared to take the city championship.

MVP: Senior forward Angelina Clay

Clay earns the coaches and The Lowell’s pick for MVP. Clay averaged an estimated 16 points per game and pulled down an average of 10 boards a game. In addition, she was declared a first team all-city member by the AAA league.
