Varsity girls’ soccer unable to start season off on right foot (2/07) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Lindsey Lavaysse

Senior Hannah Edelsberg loves to run, but don’t expect to see her on the track this year. After making a name for herself in the past three years in track and field in the 100- and 200-meter sprints, the high jump and the triple jump, Edelsberg quit to take up soccer.

“It was a hard decision to make whether to play soccer or run track this year,” she said. The decision ultimately came down to a change of heart.

“Wanting to have the best senior year possible, I decided to play soccer,” Edelsberg said. “I still have a lot of respect for the track team, and for Andy who has been a great coach the past three years.” Now, after playing for club and recreational soccer teams for the past eight years, Edelsberg is ready to show the Cardinals what she can do.

“I feel that as a senior, I’ve naturally stepped it up by using my voice more, attending as many practices as possible and showing that I am committed to the team,” she said.

So far, the team’s pre-season has been rough, with losses against Redwood High School on Feb. 13 and Tamalpias High School on Feb. 15, 0-8 and 0-4, respectively. The only bright spot in the pre-season was the 2-0 win against Oakland Tech on Feb. 6.

“Our game against Redwood was a little hard to take in at first,” Edelsberg said. “Our game against Tamalpias High School went better, but we were still missing some players, but our defense got stronger, and the JV soccer game went well, ending in a tie.”

According to senior sweeper Cheryl Fong, the team needs more practice together to succeed. “Our work on the field is difficult since we don’t know how to communicate well with each other,” Fong said. Hopefully the team will turn the cohesion problem around in time for their upcoming game against San Rafael High School on March 1 at 3:30 p.m. on Feibusch Field.
