In an age in which Youtube is a household name, a new club at Lowell is setting out to find a place in the spotlight. Members of the Amateur Filming Association produce, direct and act in their own films. The club's founders were inspired by Wong Fu Productions, a group of UC-San Diego students whose short films have become a cyberspace legend through Youtube, according to senior vice president Amy Tom. Anyone can be a director or writer in the Amateur Filming Association, according to Tom. Club members, who provide most of the filming equipment, approve every film idea through a vote, and after many discussions regarding scripts and locations, filming begins. Freshman member Emily Lemnier said she is excited about the learning opportunity the club provides. "I have been really interested in acting, directing, filming, writing and seeing how a movie comes together, and to try to figure out how to do all those things, I joined the club," she said. The club's first creation, Greatest Ironies of Love, currently in production, was inspired by Bhuwan Thapaliya's poem "Irony of Love," according to Tom, who wrote and directed the film. Club members expressed enthusiasm about the film when they approved it. "I chose to vote for Greatest Irony of Love because I really liked the idea of having picturesque people who are troubled, tormented and vengeful as the characters," freshman club member Jonathan Woo said. According to freshman club member Anna Williams, the next film the club is producing, Snow White, still needs actors. "We will be starting on our new project as soon as the director (club member sophomore Suzanne Ly) casts the characters," Williams said. "She will also be adding more parts such as other fairy tales to the script to give everyone an opportunity to participate." The Amateur Filming Association meets at 3:35 p.m every Thursday in Rm. 236.
