Girls' golf looks strong, but only by city standards (9/06) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Katie Dubin
“We would like to see a stronger league, but we’re big fish in a really tiny pond,” girls’ golf coach Lee Silverstein said.

Though his Cardinals are already menacing by AAA standards, with great leaders and a cohesive unit of girls, Silverstein will try to push them into a bigger pond by playing competitive non-league teams. He is going to enter the Cardinals in numerous tournaments in order to ensure both a 22nd city championship team and a strong showing at the state level.

The team’s co-captains, junior Katrina Delen-Briones and senior Ananda Rochita, two of the strongest golfers in the region, agreed with Silverstein’s lofty goals.

“Going to NorCal and doing well is a goal, (as well as) qualifying for state —which is our ultimate goal,” Rochita said. “It’s attainable too.”

One exciting match along the way could be against Lincoln on Oct. 10. The Mustangs have “a lot of great young players, with a lot of potential,” Delen-Briones said. However, the biggest challenge may not be coming from Lincoln or any other high schools, but rather from Silverstein’s commitment to his work in the special education department. This year it’s been “getting tougher and tougher” to balance the two, Silverstein said.

“I’m 100-percent unhappy with the current situation, but my players have been very understanding,” Silverstein said.

In fact, Rochita and Delen-Briones are helping take over the leadership of practices so their coach’s absences do not affect the team.

Lowell will be playing O’Connell at 3:30 p.m. next Thursday, Sept. 28 at Lincoln Park Golf Course.
