Varsity b-ball lags in Ben Neff (12/00)
Written by Dyanna Quizon
The varsity boy’s basketball players came charging in with confidence in their step as they faced the Sacred Heart Preparatory Fighting Irish for the second time in their short preseason. The last time they met, the Irish crippled them in a 65-31 defeat. This game, however, was not such a walk in the park for SH, as the two teams battled for the championship title in the annual Ben Neff Tournament on Dec. 9.

The first half of the game displayed the Cardinals’ improvement as they matched the Irish point for point. In the previous game SH came up big with three-point shots and took advantage of the Cardinals’ weak execution of their plays. This time, the threepoint differential was considerably less, and the concentration was evident as Lowell closed the gap, 25-28, at the half.

Playoff defeat ends varsity football season (12/00)
Written by Justina Louie
“That was sick! One more time!” senior kicker Nick Decampli cried as senior defensiveback Joel Lacayo made an aweinspiring tackle. Pumped with adrenaline, the Cardinals fought with determination against the Galileo Lions. But, in the end, their efforts fell short and the playoff game on Nov. 17 concluded with a 20-8 defeat for the Cardinals, wrapping up the season with a 5-3 record.

During the first quarter of the game, the Cardinals could not prevent the Lions from gaining yardage. With three minutes remaining in the quarter, the Lions scored a touchdown, along with a successful point after, leaving the Cardinals behind, 7-0. The Cardinals fumbled after the touchdown, and the Lions retrieved the football. At the end of the first quarter, the Lions scored again. The quarter ended with a 14-point deficit hovering over the Cardinals.

Cardinals hit practice mats hard (12/00)
Written by Jordan Rosencranz
Wrestlers new and old gather around the red mat as assistant coach Monty Worth and third year wrestler Eric Sanders give a demonstration on holds and takedowns. Worth kneels calmly next to Sanders. A voice shouts, “Go!” and Worth yanks Sanders’ arm from under him, drives him face first into the mat and follows with a swift half nelson that lands the senior flat on his back.

With an influx of new wrestlers, things are looking up for a team that finished in 4th place last year, hurt by numerous injuries and missing weight classes. The team has strong senior leaders and some promising young wrestlers despite the fact that wrestling sensations Donald Lockett and Colin Ikeda have graduated.

Nor-Cal loss ends varsity girls’ undefeated record (12/00)
Written by Alice Ho
In a crushing defeat, the Lowell girls’ volleyball team lost to St. Mary’s high school in the second round of the Nor-Cals tournament on Nov. 21, 15-2, 15-7, 15-5, ending the team’s undefeated season record.

Despite destroying Lincoln, 15- 7, 15-7, 16-14 at the All-city championships on Nov. 16, and smashing Oakland Tech High School the previous day, 15-1, 15-5, 15-7, the team was unable to go the distance.

P.E. requirement for sports teams absurd (12/00)
Written by Kameela Din
Athletes who practice their sport all year will play better during the regular season. It’s a pretty simple fact. So it seems only right that soccer players would want to practice even after their season has ended.

So why should they endure P.E. class and soccer practice? Regardless of what the coach or players think, freshmen and sophomore soccer players have to.

Skyline Titans win by four, barely slipping past varsity Cards (12/00)
Written by Mindy Cheung
A new attitude is brewing within the varsity girls’ basketball team — just what the team needs to succeed after losing two consecutive years at the championship game against the Washington Eagles.

“My main emphasis this year is on winning the championship,” coach James Thomas said. “You always try to, but you don’t put emphasis on it.”

Last year’s championship game against the Eagles ended in a close defeat, 72-68, an improvement over the year before when the girls lost 96-60.

JV boys’ b-ball team honing skills for season games (12/00)
Written by Donnie Clay
The JV boys’ basketball team is discovering that it is difficult to find the silver lining of a 20-31 preseason opener loss against Sacred Heart Cathedral, which thoroughly manhandled the Cardinals on Saturday, Nov. 25.

“It wasn’t that good of a performance,” freshman guard Matt Allen said. “There wasn’t a lot of effort or hustle, and they just outplayed us.”

Cross country finishes out season with defeat at All-State meet (12/00)
Written by Derek Steer
With the team’s top runners on the bench, the pressure was on the Cardinals to continue Lowell’s legacy of cross country domination. Veteran runners were forced to step into leadership roles and guide the team through what would be a rough season.

According to coach Andy Leong, this was a rebuilding year for the team. They performed well within the league, although they faced several setbacks.

Top runners senior Jin Daikoku and senior Michi Hirakawa-Wong were injured for most of the season.

Lady Cardinals set sights on JV basketball title (12/00)
Written by Andy Slater
Spurred on by a boisterous home crowd, freshman Katey Jong busted three-pointers from the corner like there was no tomorrow. Her long-range heroics weren’t enough, however, as the Terra Nova High School Tigers defeated the Cardinals JV girls basketball team 42- 35 on Tuesday Dec. 5.

Talented. Aggressive. Balanced. Developing their “basketball smarts.” JV girls’ basketball coach James Thomas feels confident about the upcoming season, a season in which they expect to be serious contenders for the city title. Washington will most likely be the Cardinals’ major competition defeating Lowell in last year’ championship game 50-43.

Fall 2000 sports season MVPs picks (12/00)
Written by Monique Abadilla
Each and every member of the Cardinals’ nine fall sports teams put their hearts and souls into the fall ’00 season, capturing six All-City championship titles. Athletic director John Donohue applauds athletes and coaches for their achievements this year.

“They did a great job,” Donohue said. “More power to the coaches if they can get the teams that far.”

Gymnastics Aims High Vault Over Competition(3/05)
Written by Connie Chung

Freshman Devin Henderson dominated this year’s talent show with his first-place winning, hoop-jumping Chinese acrobatic skills. Third place went to senior Jomar Basco, mainly for running up a wall. With the talent show over, how can one satisfy cravings for such flips and turns? Try going to a gymnastics meet, where student athletes perform a wide variety of similarly awe-inspring tricks. New athletes and a new varsity coach make this season’s team look promising.
