Sophomore Max MacKenzie was aiming for the green. “I hit the ball really low but it hit a bird that was on the ground,” said MacKenzie, whose shot at practice ended up killing the bird. “I felt bad for it.” Innocent birds are not the only victims of the boys’ golf team’s rigorous practices; their opponents are also feeling the pain.

Charlie Cutler ’05. Danai Leininger ’04. Emil Deandreis ’04. Mike Ng ’03. All these Lowell baseball alumns were once the staple of a team that traditionally dominated its league. In 2004, led by record-setting junior catcher Cutler, the Cardinals marched to a 29-4 record, earning them a spot in the Top 40 best high school baseball teams by Baseball America.
