    After studying global warming and alternative fuel sources, an Advanced Placement Chemistry class put their newfound knowledge to use, converting vegetable oil into usable biodiesel.
 
History honors students' film projects displayed in public

Students will present civil rights-themed video projects at a small public theater.
    Students in social studies teacher Barbara Blinick’s United States History Honors class have been working on interview-based videos focusing on “civil rights or the failure to protect civil rights,” to be presented inside the Apple Store’s theater on Stockton St. on June 12 from 6 to 8 p.m., according to Blinick

A district deputy superintendent is devising a new plan to close the achievement gap between district schools.
 
VPA department scales back on some courses

Next year some students will not be able to take the visual and performing arts class they chose.
According to assistant principal Holly Giles, there will be fewer ceramics courses offered because ceramics teacher Maria Rode will be going on sabbatical, and a replacement teacher will not be hired because of recent budget cuts.

Cow Palace Offers senior class discounted grad site

The class of ’08’s graduation ceremony will not take place in the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium as is tradition nor in the Masonic Auditorium as planned, but in the Cow Palace Stadium on 2660 Geneva Avenuein a deal the senior class government and school administration negotiated to resolve scheduling conflicts and capacity issues.
 
Students race for extra credit (4/08)

Physical Education teachers are offering incentives to students who plan to participate in races outside of school.
    PE teacher Michael Prutz is offering extra credit to students who sign up for the free Stadium-to-Stadium 10K run on June 21, beginning at AT&T Park and ending at Candlestick Park. Similarly, PE teacher Cambria Bower-Gersten offered “a few extra credit points” to any student who ran the Zippy 5K, a 3.1-mile race, through Golden Gate Park on April 20.
 
School site council prioritizes teachers, counselors (04/08)

    At an April 1 School Site Council meeting, administrators, students and parents prioritized a spending plan for any additional funds the school budget receives.
    Classroom teachers, counselors and the Internet and technology technician are top priorities on the list, which contains 16 currently unfunded items, ranging from a part-time nurse to supplies.
 
Volunteers to participate in school clean-up (3/08)

A love triangle, rebels fighting for their lives and an innkeeper stealing from a corpse were just part of the action at the school’s production of Les Miserables, a story of love and conflict during the 1830 French Revolution.
 
Physical Education classes learn traditional dances (4/08)

            The Paidushko horo, the Schuhplattler, the Saltarello, the Tarantella, the Troika and the Mayam, Mayam — these words may sound like gibberish, but all are actually traditional folk dances from the countries of Bulgaria, Austria, Italy, Russia and Israel.
            Sophomores in Physical Education teacher Michael Prutz’s classes are currently doing a folk dancing unit. Students were randomly assigned countries from a list including Austria, Bulgaria, China, Greece, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Russia and the United States. Once in groups, they chose a folk dance from their country to research, learn and present to the rest of the class.
