Dressed in traditional red costumes, the girls pace each step rhythmically, as their hands wave colorful fans in symmetrical motions and the crowd applauds with enthusiasm. That was the scene as six dancers from Lowell’s Chinese Cultural Arts Club joined the Chung Ngai Dance Troupe to perform fan dances at the annual Chinese Moon Festival Street Fair in Chinatown on Sept. 6.

After many months of planning by the principal, the new staff lounge has been made available for teachers this semester.
The new lounge is located in the obscure room next to the vending machines on the first floor, formerly the office of Information Technology. Now refurnished with a full set of maroon sofas, a decorative imitation fireplace, carpets and oriental ornamentation, it is refurnished into a quiet oasis from the crowded courtyard a few yards away.

The rising cost of food and inadequate federal funding for San Francisco Unified School District lunch programs are causing district-wide price increases in nearly all cafeteria foods.
An SFUSD high school lunch that cost $2 in 2007 now costs $3 while district-wide breakfast prices have risen to $1.50, up from $1. While some students are exempt from the expense, students who don’t qualify for free or reduced price lunch must pay the new price.

The principal announced his plan to add additional minutes to incoming freshmen schedules at a May 23 staff meeting.
Under the plan, the majority of freshmen A-code classes will become B/C code, which will add an additional 25 minutes on alternate days. All freshmen classes will be affected except physical education and first year visual art programs, according to assistant principal Mary Streshly. The proposal was developed because the school is currently over 1,000 minutes short of the number of instructional minutes that the state requires, according to Streshly.
