The administration has chosen former frosh/soph head coach Danny Chan to replace former varsity head coach Jason Krolikowski, who resigned in March.
Chan said he is looking forward to the chance to move his skills from the frosh/soph to the varsity level. After nine years of frosh/soph, it was about time, Chan said.
Many players and coaches said they are excited about Chan and anticipate great things for the teams future.
I think hes a terrific choice, defensive coordinator Al Gamboa said. His record since 1998 is 37-5, with four second-place finishes and two undefeated championship teams in 2000 and 2001.
Junior fullback and middle linebacker Craig Ng said that Chans familiarity with the team should prove beneficial.
He knows the offense, and Im glad we kept it in the family; nobody from another school, Ng said.
Graduating players also said they are happy with the decision. I think he will do well, senior Alvin Shieh said. He really knows his offensive and defensive systems; he knows what hes talking about.
Many also applaud the return of Gamboa, who planned to retire. After Chan asked him back, Gamboa decided to return for as long as he is needed. The Gamboa-Chan connection has players excited. I had both of them as coaches on frosh/soph and we did really well, Ng said. They are probably two of the best coaches in the city.
Chan has been instrumental in the formation of a new football booster club. The club raises money for the football team and has many new ideas for the next season. Im excited about the fact that the parents want to get involved, Chan said. The club will enhance the program and help Lowell football in general.
