Cross country was triumphant in its final campaign toward All-City competition on Nov. 19, and at press time the team remained hopeful of winning its 12th title in 13 years.

The squad faced Washington and Lincoln in its final regular season meet at the Polo Fields. With great weather in their favor, participants from the three schools ran the five-kilometer course in a race against the setting sun. Lowell runners knew the course, which cut through both Lindley and Speedway Meadows, ending in a half-mile straight-away on the Polo Field track.

Lincoln’s Jeffrey Chan finished the frosh/soph race with a time of 18:30. However, Lowell sophomores Johnny Yu, Chris Lao, and Justin Chin placed second, third, and fourth, respectively, with times of 18:48, 18:50, and 19:15. Coach Andy Leong felt the performance was satisfactory.

"Varsity looked sweet. When you’ve got your runners finishing one through seven, you can’t ask for much more. "

“They did well,” Leong said of his young runners. “We’re missing our four, five and six runners, but we’ll look to Yu and Lao to lead the team. We’ll have to work through it.”

The second and final race of the day was a contest with the combined boys’ and girls’ squads. Lowell posted impressive results with an all-Cardinal finish in the top seven spots. Senior Jonah Sinick continued his breakout season with a first-place finish of 19:04. Although satisfied with his time, Sinick knows All-City will be much more competitive.

“I’m definitely happy that I finished first, but there’s no doubt that next week the runners will be a minute faster,” Sinick said.

Senior Jake Cutler and junior Kevin Lo posted the next two spots with times of 19:08 and 19:10. Senior Colin Heckman and junior Jason Owyang were not far behind with times of 19:11 and 19:22, respectively. Juniors Kurtis Leong and Max Kam rounded out the top seven with finishes of 19:23 and 19:24.

Heckman was a little disappointed in his finish but is looking forward to next week’s competition.

“My ankle was hampering me a little so I didn’t run my best,” Heckman said. “I should be ready to go next week, and I expect to do well.”

Coach Andy Leong was highly impressed with his teams dominance in the race.

“All I can say is that varsity looked sweet,” Leong said. “When you’ve got your runners finishing one through seven, you can’t ask for much more. We definitely had to work for this one, as Washington and Lincoln were right with us at the two-mile mark.”

Freshman Anna Li posted the fastest girls’ time, 21:10 (fifteenth overall), while junior Tracy Zhu finished in 23:31 (28th overall). Freshman Susanna Liu’s time of 23:50 was enough to make her the third female Cardinal to cross the finish line.

With a successful season behind them, cross country members focused their attention on All-City, which took place yesterday at the Polo Fields. Coach Leong was confident in his varsity team’s ability to win the title once again, but showed concern for his younger runners.

“Varsity looks solid, but we’re going to need some help in the frosh/soph squad,” Leong said. “With some key runners out with injuries, we’re going to have to step it up if we want to win another title.”

Pending the results of yesterday’s All-City match, top-finishing runners will advance to State Finals in Fresno on Saturday, Nov. 30. (All-City competition occurred after press time.)
