The gymnastics team takes to heart the mantra “United we stand” every time it hits the mat. The gymnastics team takes to heart the mantra “United we stand” every time it hits the mat.
The gymnastics team, made up of approximately 40 members on junior varsity and 10 members on varsity, is shining in a series of events that includes the balance beam, uneven bars, floor exercise, and vaulting — all showcasing their strength, flexibility, agility and coordination.
The gymnasts turned, leaped, and danced on the balance beam, did swings and handstands on the uneven bars as they switched from high to low and vice versa, jumped and tumbled in floor exercises, and ran down runways, hurdled onto springboards and sprung onto vaults with backhand springs in vaulting, one of the more complicated events — all before flipping and twisting for the ultimate vault.
On April 15, the team went up against the Burlingame Panthers, Gilroy Mustangs, and Gunn Titans. The varsity team placed first, while the JV team placed second.
Junior JV member Min Shan Lin was satisfied with this second meet of the season. “During away meets everyone on the team is very encouraging and it helps us strive to achieve our best,” she said. “We are all supportive, and during the meet we cheer our fellow members on.”
On April 2, the team met Los Altos High School in their first meet of the season. Despite feeling nervous about their first meet, the team did well and won first place.
Luckily, they made it to the meet after practically almost missing the chance to compete. “We were nervous before getting there because we got lost on our way to the meet,” junior JV members Michelle Lee said. “Although that rattled our nerves, we stayed united and were excited that we did well.”
Though the team is overall very young, they do have some very experienced and talented players. Seniors Lily Mak and Lilly Thadeo bring over two years experience to the team.
Come support your lady Cardinals at 5 p.m. on April 30 at Cupertino High School against the Cupertino Pioneers.
