There’s a reason why love is zero in tennis — it means nothing. Following this theme, the boys’ tennis team shows no love for its opponents, playing aggressively and fiercely.
Sheer toughness is not enough to win, however: the Cardinals fell to
Aragon in their first preseason game. “We basically got hammered,”
sophomore Dylon Tong said. Sophomore singles player Brandon Kai was the
only Cardinal to manage a win. Lowell can take solace, though, in the
fact that it was missing many varsity players who make up “the core of
the team,” according to Tong. The match was also “the first match for
most freshmen," sophomore Jason Tien explained.
The loss showed the Cardinals that they will have to work even harder
for upcoming events. Fortunately, they “have the whole team ready to
go, including a few magnificent new recruits," according to junior
Frank Lu.
With "lots of new blood on the team," this year will be different, Tong
said. The players are "working hard to prepare themselves mentally and
physically for the season in order to go back to Nor-Cals and to do
well.” The determined Cardinals also need “more communication, bonding
and a lot more practice because we still haven’t worked on our
doubles,” according to Tong.
The Cardinals’ goals are to repeat as city champions as they have done
for the past two decades and “to finish strong in Nor-Cals,” Lu said.
The team has a good chance to do so with strong returning players and
new males who are up for the challenge, including freshman Alex Zhu,
who might be the number two or three singles seed.
Unfortunately the match against Saint Ignatius took place too late for
press publication. The next match is at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 22 at Lowell
against Sarah High School.
