Sono arrivato - interviews with students from Assisi (10/03) | Print | E-mail
Oct. 29, 2003
I’ve been taking Italian since I was a freshman. This past Tuesday 22 students from Assisi, Italy came to visit San Francisco. I got a chance to talk to a few of them, honing my Italian skills and getting their opinions on a few questions for The Lowell.

Interview with Cristian Iosco, age 18, from Assisi, Italy

Q: What do you think of America so far; have you been here before?
A: It is contradictory, but I love it. No I’ve never been here before. Q: What do you think of President George W. Bush?
A: He is too egotistic and doesn’t understand other people’s problems; he only thinks of his country and his economy.

Q: What do you think about the Governator?
A: He is charismatic, but I don’t understand how his experience acting will benefit him in governing. He has absolutely no experience or preparation for politics.

Q: When you got to Lowell a few students remarked that they wanted to smoke; what did you want to smoke and did you manage to?
A: That wasn’t me; I don’t smoke.

Q: Do you like to go to clubs and get drunk?
A: Yes, we drink, drink, drink and drink; we do it with friends, as well as with family.

Q: Who is more attractive, the Italian girls/guys or the American girls/guys?
A: It’s a different beauty; here there are some very nice women.

Q: What do you think of the food that you’ve eaten so far?
A: Its very different, and I hope to adapt to the food.

Q: How is fashion different in Italy?
A: We wear much tighter clothes because they fit better. Tight jeans, shirts and jackets. A few people dress in baggy clothes but not very many.

Interview with Beatrice Giubilei, age 17, from Assisi, Italy:

Q: What do you think of America so far; have you been here before?
A: It’s very pretty, but it’s also very different. I haven’t really seen enough to tell you, but so far the trip has been fun.

Q: What do you think of President George W. Bush?
A: He only thinks about America and American interests, especially the American economy.

Q: What do you think about the Governator?
A: (laughs) He’s an actor, not a politician. The cinema is not a government office. I can’t see how they are related.

Q: When you got to Lowell a few students remarked that they wanted to smoke; what did you want to smoke and did you manage to?
A: Most of my friends do, but I don’t; it seems pointless.

Q: Who is more attractive, the Italian girls/guys or the American girls/guys?
A: As a whole there aren’t good-looking guys here—one or two, but that’s it. Some Italians are very pretty but some are horrible (whispers and points)—like the guy over there.

Q: What do you think of the food that you’ve eaten so far?
A: There’s a lot of butter in the food here, and it’s very filling, but it doesn’t taste bad.

Q: How is fashion different in italy? A: People have a very different style here, in Italy all of our clothes are streamlined and close to the body.
A few people wear baggy clothes but not as baggy as your pants.
