Senior wins scholarships (4/05)
Apr. 28, 2005
This past weekend a senior in journalism was one of five students nation-wide to receive a Knight Ridder scholarship at a two-day convention at their head quarters in San Jose.

Senior Joyce Chen was one of the five winners who won $40,000 over four years, in addition to four paid summer internships starting in June and a one-year full-time job at The San Jose Mercury News. “It was incredibly scary making a four-year commitment to the Knight Ridder Scholarship, especially for a high school student just going to college,” Chen said.

Chen was also one of the eight finalists in the Al Newharth Free Spirit Scholarship. A boy and a girl from each of the 50 states and Washington D.C. — one hundred and two students in all — were selected to participate in the scholarship contest. She received the second place award of $25,000.
