This past weekend a senior in journalism was one of five students nation-wide to receive a Knight Ridder scholarship at a two-day convention at their head quarters in San Jose.
Senior Joyce Chen was one of the five winners who won $40,000 over four years, in addition to four paid summer internships starting in June and a one-year full-time job at The San Jose Mercury News. It was incredibly scary making a four-year commitment to the Knight Ridder Scholarship, especially for a high school student just going to college, Chen said.
Chen was also one of the eight finalists in the Al Newharth Free Spirit
Scholarship. A boy and a girl from each of the 50 states and Washington D.C. one hundred and two students in all were selected to participate in the scholarship contest. She received the second place award of $25,000.
