Physical education students are using a new stationary bike funded by donations a teacher has been collecting from a Web site.
Teacher and cross country coach Michael Prutz hopes to start a new class when he gets enough bikes. “We have one new bike, (and) plan to get (an) additional one this month and then five more in the spring,” he said. “We already have six in the weight room.  The spin class would be included in the weight room activities.”
Prutz received approximately $1,500 from the Donors Choose Web site (DonorsChoose.org) to purchase the stationary bike. Prutz also received grants to purchase running shoes two years ago, as well as a television, a VCR and the movie Supersize Me. He is currently waiting for donations for an elliptical training machine.
Prutz found out about the Web site through a district memo a couple of years ago.
Donors Choose is “a site where you host items you want, and people in the community can fund it (in part) or someone can fund it completely,” he said.
According to the group’s Web site, “DonorsChoose.org is dedicated to addressing the scarcity and inequitable distribution of learning materials and experiences in our public schools.”
