The Wellness Center will host a health fair featuring community-based organizations and youth services on the catwalk on Feb. 20.
Organizations including the Community Youth Center, Community United Against Violence and Suicide Prevention will present information. Students will be able to learn about reproductive health services, treating depression and job opportunities, according to community health outreach worker Brad Goya.
"I feel like there are so many opportunities out there for Lowell students to get help, but they don't know the places," said Goya, who works at the Wellness Center. "We want to raise awareness and make connections."
Some students feel that the awareness is already there.
"I think that throughout elementary school and high school, we have been deluged with information on STDs and suicide prevention," senior Marc Steiner said. "We've been so flooded with information on those topics that I don't think we're covering any new grounds."
However, sophomore Linda Chio said she thinks the fair will be very helpful.
"I think it's a good idea to have the fair," she said. "It will keep people informed about STDs, suicide and not getting stressed-out over work."
Goya said that an academically rigorous school like Lowell causes stress, but it also offers helpful resources like the Wellness Center to help students cope. All students can go to the Wellness Center in T-14 or call 759-2730 ext. 3030, if they have anything to discuss, Goya added.
"If you notice a friend, or you yourself are depressed, it is really important to talk to someone about it someone who can help," he said.
The different organizations are "here to help Lowell students," Goya said. "Lowell students just need to know about them." |
